چکیده
Sir,—In commenting on our paper [1], Kardos, Rudas and Simon described their own use of the analysis of short-term heart rate variability to assess the effect of varying posture on cardiac autonomic control. Essentially they have confirmed that head-up tilt causes sympathetic activation (as evidenced by an increase in the low frequency variability) in comparison with supine and head-down positions. This phenomenon is well described [2, 3]. Their letter also indicates that increased parasympathetic tone was found when their subjects went from head-up tilt ( + 70°) to head-down tilt ( — 30°). However, they give no indication of any comparison between the supine and head-down positions, which is the finding in which we were interested. Without this comparison we cannot comment further on their letter as their results seem consistent with our own. We would be very happy to reply to the letter of Kardos, Rudas and Simon if a statistical comparison can be given between the flat supine position and head-down tilt (with exclusion of order bias).

Airway obstruction during exercise and isocapnic hyperventilation in asthmatic subjects.
We compared pulmonary mechanics measured during long-term exercise (LTX = 20 min) with long-term isocapnic hyperventilation (LTIH = 20 min) in the same asthmatic individuals (n = 6). Peak expiratory flow (PEF) and forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV(1)) decreased during LTX (-19.7 and -22.0%, respectively) and during LTIH (-6.66 and 10. 9%, respectively). In contrast, inspiratory pulmonary res...

Although hyperventilation syndrome generally carries a good prognosis, it is associated with the risk of developing severe symptoms, such as post-hyperventilation apnea with hypoxemia and loss of consciousness. We experienced a patient who suffered from post-hyperventilation apnea. A 17-year-old female who suffered from hyperventilation syndrome for several years developed post-hyperventilation...
متن کاملHyperventilation-induced airway injury and vascular leakage in dogs: effects of alpha1-adrenergic agonists.
alpha1-Adrenergic agonists inhibit hyperventilation-induced bronchoconstriction (HIB) in dogs. We tested the hypothesis that alpha-agonists inhibit HIB by reducing bronchovascular leakage and edema that theoretically could cause airway obstruction. Peripheral airways were isolated by using a bronchoscope; pretreated with either methoxamine (Mx), norepinephrine (NE), or saline aerosol; and then ...
متن کاملNetwork Efficiency and Posterior Alpha Patterns Are Markers of Recovery from General Anesthesia: A High-Density Electroencephalography Study in Healthy Volunteers
Recent studies have investigated local oscillations, long-range connectivity, and global network patterns to identify neural changes associated with anesthetic-induced unconsciousness. These studies typically employ anesthetic protocols that either just cross the threshold of unconsciousness, or induce deep unconsciousness for a brief period of time-neither of which models general anesthesia fo...
متن کاملAn unusual example of exercise-induced asthma.
A patient with exercise-induced asthma is described in whom the post-exercise fall in F.E.V.1 was not prevented by the inhalation of isoprenaline immediately before exercise but was almost completely prevented by subcutaneous atropine given 40 minutes before exercise. A large fall in F.E.V.1 similar to the fall after exercise occurred after carbon dioxide-induced hyperventilation and voluntary ...
